Recent reports have shown that Mpox has spread to 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory, covering 63 local government areas across Nigeria. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that out of 1,297 suspected cases from January to October 2024, 94 have been confirmed.
In Epidemiology week 40, 47 new suspected cases were reported, with six cases confirmed. Since September 2017, there have been 5,114 suspected cases with 1,180 confirmed cases and 17 deaths, primarily affecting males.
The National Mpox Emergency Operation Centre is spearheading the response in collaboration with various sectors and partners. States like Cross-River, Lagos, Plateau, and Enugu have reported confirmed cases, with Ogun leading in suspected cases.
The age distribution of confirmed cases in 2024 indicates a range from 0-10 to 50 and above. The situation calls for continued vigilance and coordinated efforts to combat the spread of Mpox.
