Sikh Leader Assassination Leads to Diplomatic Tensions Between Canada and India
Last year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed to have evidence linking Indian government agents to the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This accusation has now led to a major diplomatic dispute between Canada and India.
Canada recently expelled six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner, alleging their involvement in targeting Indian dissidents in Canada. India retaliated by expelling six high-ranking Canadian diplomats, contradicting Canada’s statement.
Trudeau stated that the government has clear evidence of Indian agents engaging in criminal activities on Canadian soil, including murder and coercion. India has denied these accusations and dismissed Canada’s claims as a political agenda.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed India’s involvement in targeting Indian dissidents in Canada. As tensions escalate, Canada requested India to remove diplomatic immunity from the diplomats involved in criminal activities.
The relationship between the two countries has severely deteriorated, leading to a rupture in diplomatic ties. The accusations have strained relations as Canada and the U.S. seek to counter China’s influence.
Despite the ongoing dispute, India and Canadian officials are expected to meet to address the accusations and ease tensions between the nations.
