A Call for Action: British MPs Back Motion for Sanctions on Israel
Nearly 50 British MPs across various political parties have united to support a motion urging the Labour government to impose sanctions on Israel. Championed by independent MP Richard Burgon, the motion calls for the UK to uphold the UN General Assembly’s resolution demanding the swift end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, a resolution on which the UK had previously abstained.
The motion emphasizes compliance with international law and stresses the need for concrete steps to address Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. It calls for an end to military exports to Israel, banning imports from illegal Israeli settlements, and revoking economic ties outlined in the 2030 Roadmap.
As of now, the motion has garnered 47 MP supporters, mostly independents, Labour backbenchers, and members of nationalist parties. Notably, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is among the backers. While MPs from various parties have joined the cause, no Conservatives have yet shown their support.
Although the motion is still pending a debate date, the momentum for taking action against Israel continues to grow among British MPs, with calls for a halt to arms sales and a review of existing arms licenses to Israel.
