Volunteer Point, one of the attractions of the Falklands with various penguin species

The Falkland Islands Government confirmed a case of HPAI in dead penguins at Volunteer Point. A level 2-3 response will be implemented without declaring a full protection zone.

Restrictions will be placed on movement of people in the affected areas including limitations on handling domestic poultry and interacting with wild birds. The declaration will be reviewed on October 29, 2024.

Since July 1, 2024, there have been reports of suspect birds with some positive HPAI results. The FIG has provided guidance on bird flu prevention measures. The public is advised to report sick birds to Veterinary Services.
