Arab American Political Action Committee announced on Monday that they will not endorse either Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris or Republican former President Donald Trump in the upcoming US elections due to what they deem as “blind support” for Israel during conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. This is the first time since its founding in 1998 that AAPAC will not be endorsing a candidate, typically favoring Democrats.
With polls showing a close race between Harris and Trump, Arab and Muslim Americans, who largely supported President Joe Biden in 2020, have expressed their opposition to US support for Israel. Trump has historically had low approval ratings in these communities due to past statements and policies targeting Muslim-majority nations. However, both Trump and Harris have been vocal supporters of Israel.
Many in the Arab and Muslim American communities have urged supporters not to vote for either candidate, citing concerns over their support for Israel during conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. AAPAC condemned both candidates for endorsing actions in Gaza and Lebanon, stating their refusal to support candidates who back the “criminal Israeli government.” With criticism from various organizations, including charges of genocide brought against Israel, the issue of blind support for Israel has become a deciding factor for many voters.
