Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the recent assassination of a military leader within the UAE-backed “Shabwa Defense” factions in Shabwa province. The terrorist organization confirmed their involvement in the killing of Ahmed Mohsen Al-Suleimani, the Chief of Staff of the First Shabwa Defense Brigade, using an explosive device in the Al-Masina’a area.
According to a statement released by Al-Qaeda, Al-Suleimani had been on their wanted list for 16 months, and this assassination was a retaliation for a failed attempt on his life in the past. The group’s presence in the area increased after clashes with the Shabwa Defense forces, leading to their expulsion from Ataq Axis and Special Security in 2022.
This incident highlights the ongoing conflict between extremist groups like Al-Qaeda and the UAE-affiliated factions in the region, further destabilizing the already volatile situation in Shabwa province.
