Ten police personnel suspended for mistreatment of women protesters at Karachi Press Club
Following a clash between police and protesters outside the Karachi Press Club, ten police personnel were suspended for their high-handedness and maltreatment of women protesters. The protesters gathered for the “Sindh Rawadari March” to condemn the extrajudicial killing of Dr Shahnawaz Kunbhar, prompting a counter-protest by the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). TV footage showed the police using baton charges on demonstrators, including women, leading to a swift disciplinary response.
Deputy Inspector of Police initiated disciplinary action against all personnel involved, ensuring they continue to receive pay and allowances. The Sindh Home Minister and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan also demanded investigations into the incident. Amnesty International called for the dropping of criminal charges against protesters and an independent inquiry into police misconduct. Meanwhile, PPP leaders expressed apologies and outrage over the mistreatment of protesters, emphasizing the importance of protecting citizens’ rights even during times of heightened alertness.
