Embracing the International Day of Peace on 21st September, the UN emphasizes the importance of fostering peace by addressing conflict root causes. In Yemen, amidst a decade-long crisis, the need for a culture of peace is vital, especially at the local level.
UNDP Yemen, with EU support, launched the SIERY Project in 2020 to enhance institutional and economic resilience. This project focuses on capacity building for local authorities and private sectors, aiming to boost local economic development and community trust.
In addition, efforts to revitalize critical infrastructure like the Port of Aden and provide durable solutions for internally displaced persons are underway. Projects like PIAJY and the Small Grant Mechanism aim to strengthen justice systems and empower civil society organizations to promote inclusive peace processes.
Despite challenges, Yemen’s progress in governance, displacement support, and community-based peacebuilding offers hope for sustainable peace and stability. Continued investment and a focus on inclusivity are crucial for Yemen’s journey towards lasting peace.
