British Government Rejects Calls to Suspend Arms Sales to Israel

The British government has once again refused to impose additional restrictions on arms sales to Israel, particularly in relation to the supply of F-35 fighter jet parts. This decision comes despite concerns raised about the use of these weapons against civilians in Gaza and Lebanon.

In a recent parliamentary session, independent lawmaker Shockat Adam urged Secretary of State for Defence John Healey to consider suspending the F-35 program, citing the devastating impact on innocent civilians. Healey confirmed that while the UK has partially suspended arms exports to Israel, the government is also advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Earlier in September, the British government suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel following a review, citing the risk of these exports being used to violate international humanitarian law. However, components for the F-35 fighter jet program were not included in the suspension.

Despite these measures, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed the government’s commitment to complying with international law.
