Spain’s PM urges EU to halt trade with Israel

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain and Ireland have called on the European Union to suspend the free trade deal with Israel due to its violations of international law in Gaza and Lebanon. Both countries have been urging other EU members to review the EU-Israel Association Agreement, citing potential breaches of human rights clauses.

Evidence of EU divisions over arms deliveries to Israel has surfaced, with Spain and France advocating for an embargo while others push for more weapons. The attacks by Israel on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon have raised concerns about the nation’s disregard for the international rules-based order.

Micheal Martin emphasized the need for transparency in Gaza and condemned the violence and destruction in the region. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot highlighted the importance of diplomatic solutions over the use of force in the Middle East conflict, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon.

International criticism has intensified against Israel following its airstrikes in Lebanon and Gaza, prompting fears of a broader regional conflict. Despite warnings, Israel escalated the situation by launching a ground incursion into southern Lebanon.
