Nigeria’s Wildlife Protection Bill Set for Public Hearing
The upcoming public hearing scheduled for October 24, 2024, in Nigeria’s House of Representatives will focus on the Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill, 2024. Championed by Hon. Terseer Ugbor, the Bill aims to address wildlife trafficking, habitat destruction, and the decline of precious wildlife in Nigeria.
The proposed legislation aims to enhance law enforcement capabilities, empower investigators to delve into financial matters, expedite wildlife cases in court, and impose stricter penalties on offenders. It also aligns with international treaties to promote global cooperation in combating wildlife crimes.
Organizations such as Africa Nature Investors Foundation (ANI), Environmental Investigation Agency UK (EIA), and Wild Africa (WA) have expressed their support for the Bill. Additionally, the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, the UK Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund, and the Pangolin Crisis Fund have provided backing for Nigeria’s anti-trafficking efforts.
The public hearing, jointly hosted by the Committees on Treaties, Protocols, Agreements, and the Environment, invites stakeholders to contribute to the conversation on safeguarding Nigeria’s natural heritage. It is crucial to protect wildlife for a balanced ecosystem and sustainable livelihoods.
