Protesters in Moldova March Against President Sandu

Dozens took to the streets of Chisinau, Moldova, to denounce President Maia Sandu and her administration’s policies. The anti-government protesters, carrying banners and empty pots, accused Sandu of driving the country to poverty. The demonstration, unofficially named the “march of the hungry” and “the march of the deceived pensioners,” featured people chanting slogans and banging on pots to demand Sandu’s resignation.

The protest, organized by the opposition movement ‘Victory of the Young,’ aimed to draw attention to the low standard of living in the country, especially in anticipation of the upcoming heating season. Moldova, a former Soviet republic situated between Romania and Ukraine, has been actively seeking EU and NATO membership since 2020 under Sandu’s leadership, garnering both support and criticism.

The protest comes ahead of Moldova’s presidential election and a referendum on EU integration. Critics of President Sandu’s administration accuse her of worsening the country’s economic and energy crises, leading Moldova further into poverty. Farmers have been particularly affected by her EU accession plans, with accusations of land and property exploitation at low prices.
