Mbalula-Lesufi feud ignites protest at ANC GNU event

The recent clash between ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula and Gauteng chairperson Panyaza Lesufi led to a tense silent demonstration outside Luthuli House in Johannesburg on Monday, amidst the ANC’s “100 days of government of national unity” celebration. As Mbalula called for the national anthem to be sung, protestors held up placards with messages such as “Don’t kill Chris Hani again” and “We are Panyaza Lesufi, Panyaza Lesufi is us.”

Mbalula, visibly irritated, addressed the demonstrators accusing them of disrupting the event. Lesufi also criticized the protesters for their actions, emphasizing the need to respect the party leadership. The event aimed to reflect on the progress made in the first 100 days of the government of national unity.

President Cyril Ramaphosa intervened slightly by reminding Mbalula that the leadership belongs to the ANC and not any individual. It was a day filled with political tension and power struggles within the party.
