Italy sends first migrant group to Albania: Reuters

Italy is sending a group of migrants to Albania on a navy ship as part of a plan to process asylum-seekers abroad, marking a controversial move. The Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, has established reception centers in Albania to divert migrants from EU nations to a non-EU country.

The navy ship Libra departed from Lampedusa with rescued male migrants from various countries deemed safe by Italy, subject to expedited border checks. Safe countries on Italy’s list include Bangladesh, Egypt, Ivory Coast, and Tunisia, with limitations on asylum possibilities.

However, a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice challenges the designation of safe countries outside the EU, potentially impacting Italy’s plans. Matteo Villa from the ISPI think-tank suggests that Italy might face obstacles in sending migrants to Albania. The Italian interior ministry has refrained from commenting on the ECJ ruling.
