Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her condemnation of Israel’s attack on UNIFIL during a phone call with Netanyahu and demanded the implementation of Resolution 1701.

Meloni labeled Tel Aviv’s assault on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) as “unacceptable” and stressed the importance of protecting the peacekeeping force as mandated by the UN Security Council.

In response, Netanyahu called for the immediate withdrawal of UNIFIL from southern Lebanon, claiming it was necessary for the safety of the peacekeepers. However, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati rejected this demand, emphasizing Lebanon’s commitment to UNIFIL’s role.

The United Nations highlighted the “serious risk” faced by UNIFIL in Lebanon following Israeli attacks, leading to concerns about the safety and security of peacekeepers in the region.
