Canada and India find themselves embroiled in a heated diplomatic dispute, with Canadian police accusing Indian diplomats of engaging in criminal and clandestine activities. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) revealed evidence of Indian diplomats using their official positions to collect information for the government of India through coercion and proxies. This revelation comes after the expulsion of senior diplomats from both countries.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned India’s alleged involvement in the assassination of prominent Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia last year. Canada’s Foreign Minister, Mélanie Joly, expressed frustration over India’s lack of cooperation in the investigation, leading to the expulsion of six individuals involved in the Nijjar case.
The accusations have strained diplomatic relations between the two countries, with India denying the allegations and accusing Canada of having a political agenda. Activists have accused India of orchestrating a campaign of transnational terrorism targeting Sikhs, while the US agencies claimed to have thwarted an assassination attempt by an Indian official on Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh separatist.
