India recalls envoy from Canada amid tensions over murder investigation
India has decided to withdraw its ambassador and diplomats from Canada following accusations that they were involved in the murder investigation of a Sikh activist. The Canadian government identified Indian Ambassador Sanjay Kumar Verma and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. New Delhi rejected the charges and summoned the Canadian charge d’affaires to the Foreign Ministry, condemning the “baseless targeting” of Indian officials.

The Indian Ministry stated that the safety of its diplomats was endangered by Canada’s actions, citing an atmosphere of extremism and violence. As a response, India has chosen to withdraw its ambassador and targeted diplomats from Canada and reserved the right to take further steps against the Canadian government’s alleged support for extremism and separatism.

Tensions between India and Canada rose after Nijjar, a proponent of a separate Khalistani state, was killed outside a Sikh temple. Despite Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations linking the Indian government to the killing, India dismissed the claims as “absurd” and criticized the lack of evidence provided. The situation continues to escalate between the two countries as the diplomatic dispute unfolds.
