India recalls Canadian envoy implicated in investigation

India’s recent decision to expel six Canadian diplomats in response to Ottawa’s labeling of Indian officials as “persons of interest” has escalated tensions between the two countries. The move comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of involvement in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada back in 2023.

India has vehemently denied these allegations and criticized Trudeau for pursuing a “political agenda.” The Indian government stated that it no longer trusts the security commitments of the Canadian government, leading to the withdrawal of its High Commissioner and other officials from Canada.

Despite Canada’s claims of providing evidence linking Indian officials to the assassination, India insists that no such evidence has been shared. This latest development follows previous disputes, including Canada’s withdrawal of diplomats from India and naming India and China as main threats to its democratic institutions.

The allegations of assassination plots against Sikh leaders have strained relations between India, Canada, and the U.S. as they navigate geopolitical dynamics in the face of China’s growing influence. The situation remains complex and raises questions about the future of diplomatic relations between these nations.
