India expels Canadian diplomats over death probe dispute

India and Canada find themselves embroiled in a diplomatic scandal, with India ordering the expulsion of six Canadian diplomats in response to being named as “persons of interest” in an investigation. This move comes after tensions escalated in 2023 when Canadian PM Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of being involved in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada. India vehemently denied the accusations and slammed Canada for pursuing a political agenda.

The situation deteriorated further when Canada refused to provide evidence to back its claims, leading to India withdrawing its High Commissioner and other diplomats from Canada. Canada, on the other hand, stood by its allegations and urged India to investigate.

This latest development adds to the strained ties between the two countries, which were further exacerbated by Canada naming both India and China as the main threats to its democratic institutions. Additionally, the US also alleged Indian involvement in an assassination plot of a Sikh separatist leader in New York, further straining relations.

The accusations and counter-accusations have put a strain on India’s relationships with Canada and the US, as they navigate delicate diplomatic waters while trying to counter China’s influence on the global stage.
