Diplomatic Tensions Rise as India Expels Canadian Officials
Last year, the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar led to accusations against New Delhi by the Trudeau-led government. In response, India has expelled six Canadian diplomats, including High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler, requiring them to leave the country by Saturday.
Hours after this announcement, New Delhi revealed its decision to withdraw its own high commissioner and diplomats from Canada. This move came after the Canadian government linked Indian officials to Nijjar’s murder, with Ottawa suggesting that these officials were of interest in the ongoing investigation.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Michael Duheme disclosed that investigations unveiled Indian diplomats engaging in clandestine activities, including collecting information for the Indian government. The tensions between the two nations escalated further when Canada accused India of involvement in criminal activities aimed at the South Asian community, particularly in the Khalistan movement.
Canada, home to a significant Sikh population, remains embroiled in diplomatic strife with India. Despite denials from New Delhi, Prime Minister Trudeau continues to push for accountability and proof of these allegations.
