EU-Israel trade relations in jeopardy over violations: Borrell

The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, raised concerns about Israel’s violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza and Lebanon, putting the bloc’s trade relations with Israel at risk. Borrell urged foreign ministers to discuss the issue at their next meeting, citing worries about the status of international humanitarian law in the two regions.

Spain and Ireland had earlier proposed scrutinizing the partnership agreement between the EU and Israel, covering industry, energy, transport, and tourism. Borrell warned that if Israel continues to disregard basic principles, the European Commission could propose suspending the agreement.

The EU’s struggle to address the escalating conflict in the Middle East was evident as member countries had differing opinions on the situation. Borrell expressed frustration over the delay in condemning Israeli attacks on the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon, with some EU countries not being forceful enough in their support.

Calls for a cease-fire and consistency in dealing with Israel’s actions were made by European leaders, emphasizing the need for unity and moral responsibility in responding to the crisis.
