EU imposes sanctions on Iran for providing drones & missiles to Russia

The European Union took a strong stance on Monday by imposing sanctions on Iran’s deputy defense minister, members of the Revolutionary Guard, and three airlines for allegedly supplying drones, missiles, and equipment to Russia for its war against Ukraine. Deputy Defense Minister Seyed Hamzeh Ghalandari and other senior officials were banned from traveling in Europe, with their assets frozen. The EU cited Ghalandari’s involvement in Iran’s drone and missile program due to his high-level defense role.

Iran Air, Mahan Air, and Saha Airlines also faced asset freezes for transferring Iranian-made drones and technologies to Russia for use in the conflict in Ukraine. EU foreign ministers endorsed the sanctions during a meeting in Luxembourg and had previously warned of swift responses to such actions. The EU has been supporting Ukraine with weapons, ammunition, and other aid since Russia’s invasion. Apart from Hungary, all member countries have contributed approximately 118 billion euros ($129 billion).
