Ecuador’s Energy Crisis: No End in Sight

Monday, October 14th 2024 – 10:38 UTC

Ecuador has a 30% deficit in its electricity generation capacity

Despite efforts by the government, Ecuador is currently facing a 30% deficit in its electricity generation capacity, leading to ongoing power shortages. Energy Minister Inés Manzano recently warned that the situation may persist due to a lack of rainfall in key areas.

With blackouts expected to continue until April 2025, the government has implemented emergency measures to manage the crisis. Plans to add more electricity production equipment are on hold, and users are advised to plan for scheduled power outages.

The worsening drought since September has affected hydroelectric power plants, exacerbating the energy shortage. President Daniel Noboa has proposed increasing the cap on private electric generation, but experts suggest it may take several years to see significant results.
