China’s military exercises around Taiwan demonstrate strength

China issued a “stern warning” to Taiwan through military drills on Monday, involving fighter jets and warships to encircle Taiwan’s “separatist” forces. This marks Beijing’s fourth round of large-scale war games in just over two years, with the possibility of using force to bring Taiwan under its control.

The United States criticized China’s actions as “unwarranted” and potentially leading to “escalation,” urging Beijing to exercise restraint. Despite this, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, who has taken a bold stance on defending the island’s sovereignty, vowed to protect Taiwan’s security.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized the irreconcilable nature of Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait. The drills, named Joint Sword-2024B, aim to test troops’ joint operational capabilities and focus on various combat-readiness scenarios.

The Liaoning aircraft carrier group was also involved in the exercises, demonstrating China’s military prowess and readiness to counter any potential threats in the region.
