China’s military drills increase pressure on Taiwan

Taiwan Condemns China’s Military Exercises as “Irrational and Provocative”

The Defense Ministry of Taiwan has strongly condemned China’s recent military exercises, named “Joint Sword-2024B,” as irrational and provocative. The drills simulated a blockade of Taiwan, just days after President Lai Ching-te’s National Day speech asserting Taiwan’s independence from China. Beijing considers Taiwan a province of China and has threatened to reunify the island with the mainland by force if necessary.

The exercises, which included multiple branches of China’s People’s Liberation Army, were a stern warning against separatist acts according to the PLA’s Eastern Theater Command. The drills focused on sea-air combat readiness, blockades, assaults, and joint operations to seize superiority.

This time, China’s Coast Guard played a significant role in the exercises, signaling a shift in military strategy against Taiwan. The drills also tested the performance of China’s aircraft carrier Liaoning. Despite growing Chinese pressure, Taiwanese citizens remain resolute in their support for President Lai’s stance against Beijing.

While tensions between Taiwan and China escalate, the international community closely watches the situation unfold, with the possibility of further military intimidation on the horizon.

Overall, Taiwan remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty amidst China’s aggressive military posturing.
