China Conducts Military Drills Near Taiwan Amid Tensions
China’s military initiated new military exercises near Taiwan as a warning against separatist acts by Taiwan independence forces. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait are incompatible, with pro-independence provocations facing countermeasures.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te pledged to protect democratic Taiwan and national security while expressing a commitment to avoid escalating the conflict with China. The drills, known as Joint Sword-2024B, aim to test the joint operations capabilities of Chinese troops and send a stern warning to Taiwan independence forces.
Taiwan’s Response and International Concerns
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry condemned China’s actions as irrational and provocative, emphasizing the defense of freedom and democracy. Taiwan criticized China’s refusal to renounce force, labeling it as a threat to regional stability.
In response to mounting tensions, the United States criticized China’s military drills around Taiwan, underscoring the need for restraint to prevent escalation. Taiwanese President Lai’s recent speech asserting resistance to annexation and the US State Department’s warning against Chinese actions signal escalating tensions in the region.
