China conducts military exercises encircling Taiwan

China recently conducted military drills off the coast of Taiwan as a response to President William Lai’s speech vowing to defend Taiwan’s sovereignty. Taiwan detected a large number of Chinese naval vessels and aircraft near its territory, showcasing China’s military capabilities. The drills involved simulating attacks on Taiwan by land, sea, and air, emphasizing China’s determination to assert control over the island. Despite the tension, Taiwan’s defense ministry emphasized avoiding direct conflict to prevent escalation.

This latest military exercise is part of China’s ongoing intimidation tactics towards Taiwan, dating back to 1996. The US has previously intervened to prevent attacks on Taiwan, highlighting the strategic importance of the island. Tensions between China and Taiwan escalated when Tsai Ing-wen, seen as a pro-independence leader, was elected president in 2016. The US has also shown support for Taiwan, further provoking China.

The recent drills by China have raised concerns about regional stability, with the US urging China to refrain from actions that could disrupt peace. The significance of Taiwan in geopolitics continues to be a point of contention between China and the US.
