India recalls top envoy to Canada amid escalating tensions over Sikh dissident killing allegations
Canada has expelled six Indian diplomats following a police investigation into “criminal activity” and a reported “campaign of violence” against dissidents. In response, India has expelled an equal number of Canadian diplomats.
The tensions between the two countries stem from accusations by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2023 linking Indian agents to the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India vehemently denies the allegations and challenges Canada to provide evidence.
The latest escalation in tensions came as India summoned the Canadian charge d’affaires to denounce the “baseless targeting” of Indian diplomats and officials. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that India has lost faith in the Canadian government’s commitment to their security.
As the diplomatic row intensifies, both countries stand firm in their positions, with India accusing Canada of allowing violent extremists to target Indian officials and community leaders, while Canada has not publicly responded to the allegations as of yet.
