Canada and India expel diplomats amid escalating feud over assassination.

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Canada and India have each expelled six diplomats in retaliation for the June 2023 assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Canadian officials have accused the Indian government of being involved in the crime, leading to a diplomatic stand-off between the two nations.

The tit-for-tat expulsions come after Canadian authorities uncovered evidence of ongoing criminal activity linked to the Indian government. India, in turn, rejected Canada’s claims and retaliated by expelling an equal number of Canadian diplomats.

The ongoing dispute has strained relations between the two countries, with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau standing by the allegations against India, while India has dismissed them as baseless. The fallout has resulted in a significant reduction of diplomatic staff in both nations, signaling a continued impasse in their relationship.
