Calls for stronger cyber rules in India amidst rising wave of attacks

An alarming wave of cyberattacks is wreaking havoc in India, compromising millions of personal records. Tech analysts are calling for stronger regulations and countermeasures to address the critical vulnerabilities in the country’s digital infrastructure.

Various sectors, such as healthcare, education, government, and critical infrastructure, have been severely impacted. These sectors often lack adequate cybersecurity measures, making them attractive targets for cybercriminals, according to Diwakal Dayal, vice president of SentinelOne.

Recent cyberattacks have targeted major entities like Star Health Insurance, the Supreme Court’s YouTube channel, and the popular podcast BeerBiceps. A hacker breached Star Health Insurance, accessing 7.24 terabytes of data and compromising the personal information of 3.1 million people, demanding a ransom from the company in August.

The stolen data, which includes names, birthdays, tax identities, and medical records, has been put up for sale online, causing a significant drop in the insurer’s share price. The incidents highlight the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in India.
