The historic center of San Salvador, where Bukele’s family invested, has been a key focus of the government. The president’s brother’s purchase raised questions, with the lead investigator pointing out discrepancies in financial filings. The Association of Journalists of El Salvador expressed concern over the situation, urging the government to refrain from threatening journalists who uncover abuses of power.
Investigations Uncover Family Land Purchases
The investigations also revealed a significant increase in the Bukele family’s land holdings, with acquisitions including luxury properties and coffee plantations. Questions arose regarding the rapid asset growth of family companies, fueled by mortgage loans from private banks. The president and his brother defended their actions, claiming they used existing capital for purchases.
