Brazil urged to detain Putin at G20: Ukraine’s Prosecutor Genera

In a recent interview with Reuters, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andrii Kostin stated that Brazil is obligated to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends the upcoming G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. This comes after the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for Putin’s arrest due to his involvement in the deportation of Ukrainian children.

Despite speculation that Putin may attend the summit, Brazilian government officials have not confirmed his presence. Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that a decision regarding Putin’s attendance has not been made. As a party to the ICC’s Rome Statute, Brazil would be required to detain Putin if he enters the country.

This potential scenario has sparked international attention, with Kostin emphasizing the importance of holding Putin accountable. The situation is reminiscent of Putin’s recent visit to Mongolia, where despite his arrest warrant, he received a warm welcome.

As the G20 summit approaches, the spotlight remains on Brazil and its obligation to uphold international law by potentially arresting Putin.
