Benue sets up shelters for flood victims, provides aid materials.

The Benue State Government has swiftly responded to the recent floods in Makurdi by establishing camps and distributing relief materials to affected victims. Josephine Haba, a member of the state Technical Committee on Flood, ensured that all verified victims were attended to at designated camps, including NKST Primary School, Wadata, Gaadi Comprehensive Secondary School, and Makurdi International Market.

Despite ongoing victim registration, relief distribution of rice, beds, and mosquito nets had already begun, with wash kits and other essentials to follow. The International Organisation for Migration was assisting in the verification process and camp renovations. One victim, Mrs. Ashi Aganyi, shared her experience of annual flooding in the Inyongu community, urging the government to find a lasting solution.

Local residents like Terhemba Pine recounted their losses and reluctance to relocate, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable flood prevention measures. The situation is dire in areas like Gyado Villa, Wadata, and Wurukum, underscoring the necessity for coordinated relief efforts and long-term planning to mitigate future disasters.
