The Australian Republican Movement (ARM) has launched a cheeky campaign ahead of King Charles’s upcoming visit to Australia, labeling it as the “farewell tour” of the British monarchy. The campaign aims to spark discussions about the role of the Crown in modern Australia, using satirical posters, T-shirts, and other merchandise portraying the royal family as aging rock stars.
The push comes as Australia grapples with the idea of becoming a republic, with growing public support for constitutional change. Despite a failed referendum in 1999, recent research commissioned by the ARM shows that 92% of Australians are either in support of a republic or open to the idea.
Organizers are urging Australians to “wave goodbye to royal reign” and embrace a full-time, fully committed head of state loyal only to the country. However, Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s government has put plans for a vote on hold, stating it is not a priority issue.
As King Charles prepares for his visit, he has reiterated that the decision about Australia’s future lies in the hands of its people. Constitutional changes in Australia are rare and challenging to pass, requiring significant support from both the nation as a whole and individual states.
