ANC’s Mokonyane: Morocco ‘blunder’ won’t impact trade

Despite a recent incident involving a senior leader, ANC deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane asserts the party’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi people. Mokonyane emphasized that the incident would not affect trade relations and reiterated the party’s commitment to its values.

Last week, Obed Bapela, a deputy head of the international relations subcommittee, misrepresented the ANC during a visit to Morocco, causing embarrassment and tension with allies in Western Sahara and Algeria. Mokonyane clarified that Bapela’s actions were unauthorized and that the ANC’s stance on self-determination for the people of Western Sahara remains unchanged.

Despite the controversy, the ANC continues to advocate for the recognition of an independent Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, challenging Morocco’s occupation of the Western Sahara. While Bapela has faced consequences for his actions, the ANC is determined to uphold its principles in advocating for the Sahrawi people’s rights.
