Communal Clash Leaves One Dead and 14 Houses Burnt in Eastern Equatoria

Tragedy struck Oronyo Village in Torit County, Eastern Equatoria, as a longstanding dispute between Isaru and Hiyu youths escalated into violence. The clash resulted in one fatality and the destruction of 14 homes, leaving several people displaced and seeking refuge in the bush.

The conflict stems from a simmering tension between the two groups, exacerbated by previous incidents of violence and mutual accusations. Despite efforts to mediate and resolve the dispute, violent skirmishes persisted, leading to the recent tragic events in the village.

Local authorities, including Oronyo youth leader Abdalla Thomas and MP Angelina Quintino, have called for government intervention to quell the tensions and prevent further bloodshed. The situation remains tense, with the community traumatized by the loss of lives and property.

The Civil Society Network Chairperson, Charles Onen Lokwaruk, also condemned the violence, emphasizing the need to protect the rights of vulnerable groups caught in the crossfire. Urgent action is required to address the root causes of the conflict and restore peace in the region.
