The main opposition party in South Korea, the Democratic Party, has launched a new internal organization called the National Security Situation Check Committee to address concerns about the government’s transparency in handling North Korea-related security issues. Led by lawmaker Park Ji-won, the committee aims to provide the public with clear explanations and expert insights on security matters.

Park announced the committee’s first meeting on Facebook, expressing the need for comprehensive situational assessments and transparency in informing the public. The committee includes lawmakers with expertise in diplomacy and security, such as former general Kim Byung-joo and former unification minister Jeong Dong-young.

Park criticized recent statements from the government’s national security office and proposed restraint and dialogue as paths to de-escalate tensions with North Korea. The move reflects a proactive approach to security challenges and a commitment to peaceful resolution.
