Violence, unrest dominate Pakistan’s SCO summit

Pakistan is gearing up to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit amidst heightened security measures due to recent militant attacks and political unrest. Senior officials from India, Russia, and China will be attending the two-day conference in Islamabad.

Leading up to the summit, Pakistani authorities have cracked down on dissent by banning an ethnic nationalist movement and imposing new restrictions on protests. Hundreds of supporters of opposition leader Imran Khan have been arrested for attempting a march in the capital.

The recent attack on Chinese engineers in Karachi has raised security concerns, as separatist groups often target Chinese nationals in Pakistan. Islamabad has authorized the deployment of troops on the streets during the summit to ensure safety.
