Devastating Floods in Silesia: Recovery Efforts Underway
The recent floods in the Silesian region of Poland have caused an estimated PLN 355 million in damages, with 18 municipalities reporting losses. Despite the heavy toll, assessments are still ongoing in other areas. Authorities have already provided PLN 20.2 million in emergency aid to affected residents, with additional support from social services.
Military and Government Response
The Polish military played a crucial role in the flood response, assisting in levee reinforcement, waterway clearing, and direct aid to flood victims. The Territorial Defense Forces have been helping with cleanup operations in the worst-affected Bielsko and Cieszyn counties. Meanwhile, the Water Authority of Gliwice has restricted public access to flood levees in the Odra River basin for safety.
Efforts are being made to repair riverbanks, clear water channels, and clean up the Racibórz Dolny reservoir, which helped contain 147 million cubic meters of floodwater. The community continues to rally together to support those in need and rebuild after this natural disaster.
