Tens of thousands of people gathered in Madrid to demand more affordable housing as rental prices soar due to the presence of Airbnb and Booking.com in the short-term rental market. Protesters, chanting “Housing is a right, not a business,” called for lower rents and improved living conditions.

Conflicting Estimates

While the government estimated that around 22,000 people participated in the rally, organizers claimed that up to 150,000 individuals showed up to voice their concerns. Following the protest, a group of demonstrators continued marching on Madrid’s Gran Vía, causing traffic disruptions.

In response to the housing crisis, the Spanish government announced plans to crack down on short-term and seasonal holiday rentals by investigating listings on platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com for proper rental licenses.

Barcelona Joins the Movement

Concurrently, residents in Barcelona protested against overtourism, attributing rising rental prices to events like the America’s Cup. Concerns over the impact of tourism on housing affordability have spurred protests in various Spanish cities, including the Canary Islands and Malaga.
