Prime Minister Modi Urges Accountability in Public Service by Assessing Employee Performance
To prioritize accountability in public service, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly asked Union secretaries to assess the performance of government employees. This assessment should be done under rules allowing the government to retire staff in the public interest.
Modi emphasized the importance of promptly addressing public grievances, resulting in over 500 government officers being retired under performance-related rules. His directives followed the BJP’s significant victory in the Haryana assembly elections.
The Prime Minister’s focus on good governance and development was highlighted in a meeting with Union ministers and secretaries. He stressed the importance of addressing public grievances promptly without delays.
Modi referred to Fundamental Rule 56(j) of the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, which allows the government to retire employees for reasons such as lack of integrity or ineffectiveness, serving the public interest. These rules aim to achieve an efficient administration at all levels.
Under these rules, performance reviews can lead to retirement orders, which can be appealed against by the employee within three weeks. Compulsory retirement, a penalty, requires adequate notice or payment.
The Prime Minister’s push for accountability and efficiency in public service reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and effective governance.
