Italian Prime Minister Condemns Israeli Attack on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
Over the weekend, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressing strong disapproval of the recent attack on UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) troops by Israeli armed forces. Meloni emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of UNIFIL personnel and reiterated Italy’s commitment to stabilizing the Israel-Lebanon border through the implementation of UNSC Resolution 1701.
UNIFIL reported that Israeli tanks destroyed a gate at a peacekeeping site in southern Lebanon and shelled an observation post, resulting in injuries to peacekeepers. Italy, with about 1,000 soldiers in the UNIFIL mission, has taken a firm stance against the attacks on UN bases.
The Italian Defense Minister summoned Israel’s Ambassador to Rome and issued a stern warning regarding the incidents. The escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has drawn international concern, with fears of a regional war on the horizon.
