Investigation opened into alleged Russian killing of 9 POWs in Kursk

In a recent development, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Andriy Kostin, revealed that an investigation has been launched following reports of Russian troops shooting nine Ukrainian soldiers who had surrendered as prisoners. Kostin emphasized the seriousness of this act, labeling it as a violation of the Geneva Conventions and an international crime. The incident, which took place in Kursk Oblast on Oct. 10, has sparked outrage and condemnation from various sources, including Ukraine’s First Tank Brigade and the Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets.

Reports suggest that the number of summary executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian soldiers has significantly increased in recent times. Yurii Belousov, head of the department focused on war-related crimes, highlighted that at least 93 Ukrainian POWs have been summarily executed on the battlefield, with the majority of cases occurring in 2024. This alarming trend has alerted international organizations such as the U.N. and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
