Iceland’s three-party coalition government collapsed recently due to policy disagreements, leading to new elections. Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson cited tensions within the coalition, particularly on foreign policy, asylum seekers, and energy issues as reasons for the split.
The coalition consisted of Benediktsson’s Independence Party, the Left-Green Movement, and the Progressive Party. Differences in vision and policy priorities emerged, necessitating a reevaluation and fresh mandate through upcoming elections in November.
Benediktsson announced plans to dissolve parliament and prepare for elections during a meeting with Iceland’s President Halla Tomasdottir. This development follows his appointment as prime minister in April 2024, succeeding Katrin Jakobsdottir of the Left-Green Movement.
