Iceland’s Prime Minister, Bjarni Benediktsson, has announced the dissolution of the country’s governing coalition and called for elections to be held on November 30. The decision came after growing disagreements between the three governing parties on issues like asylum seekers and energy efficiency. Benediktsson stated he would be meeting with Icelandic President Halla Tomasdottir to discuss the decision to dissolve parliament.
The elections must take place within 45 days of the dissolution of parliament. Benediktsson, who heads the right-wing Independence Party, took office in April after the previous prime minister, Katrin Jakobsdottir, stepped down. The coalition government, which includes the Independence Party, the Progressive Party, and the Left Greens, has faced challenges due to recent volcanic eruptions and economic pressures.
