Taiwan on High Alert as Chinese Aircraft Carrier Detected near Island

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry is on high alert after a Chinese aircraft carrier was spotted to the south of the island, intensifying tensions between the two nations. The incident followed a speech by Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, during the country’s National Day celebrations, where he vowed to resist annexation and emphasized Taiwan’s autonomy from Beijing.

The Defense Ministry stated that China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier group was moving towards the western Pacific, closely monitored by Taiwanese military intelligence systems. This maneuver came after China released a propaganda video showcasing its military strength, further escalating the situation.

History of the China-Taiwan Conflict

The conflict between China and Taiwan stems from a civil war in 1949, leading to the retreat of Chiang Kai-shek’s forces to Taiwan. Despite operating autonomously, Taiwan has never formally declared independence from mainland China, prompting Beijing to threaten military action to assert control over the island.

Beijing’s aggressive tactics, including military drills and diplomatic isolation, have heightened tensions with Taiwan, jeopardizing regional stability in East Asia.
