Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced plans to create a new state within Tirana for the Shi’ite Bektashi Sufi order. The mini state, inspired by the Vatican, will be home to the order’s clergy and administrative staff. This declaration has sparked controversy, especially from rivals in Turkey.
The spiritual leader of the Bektashis, Baba Mondi, supports the creation of this new state. In an exclusive interview, he expressed his vision for the Bektashi World Center in Tirana to become a sovereign state promoting moderation and peaceful coexistence.
Baba Mondi shared his personal journey and the challenges faced by the Bektashis during Communist times in Albania. Despite religious persecution, the community persevered, and after the fall of Communism, they rebuilt their institutions and communities.
Discussing the role of religion in the world today, Baba Mondi emphasized the importance of unity and peace among religious leaders. He highlighted the Bektashis’ commitment to tolerance and acceptance of all people, including his positive experiences visiting Israel.
