Tensions have been escalating in the South China Sea between China and ASEAN members, raising concerns of a potential conflict involving the United States. The sea, a key trade route, was a major point of contention at the meetings, with discussions on confidence-building measures to reduce risks of escalation.
ASEAN called for the early conclusion of a code of conduct in accordance with international law. They also demanded an end to violence in Myanmar and the start of inclusive dialogue to address the humanitarian crisis in the country. ASEAN welcomed Thailand’s initiative to host talks on Myanmar later this year.
These developments highlight the region’s commitment to resolving conflicts and promoting stability in Southeast Asia amidst challenging geopolitical dynamics.
