Zelensky in Berlin Optimistic War With Russia Will End 2023

President Zelensky of Ukraine expressed optimism that the war with Russia would end next year as he sought military support in Berlin. He thanked Germany for its assistance and emphasized the importance of continued support. Chancellor Scholz pledged more defense equipment and aid for 2025, affirming ongoing support for Ukraine. Both leaders agreed on the necessity of a peace conference involving Russia, but emphasized the need for a peace based on international law, not dictated by Russia.

Zelensky’s European tour for aid comes amid concerns of reduced support if Donald Trump is reelected. A defense meeting at the Ramstein air base was postponed due to President Biden’s cancelled visit. Germany, a key military aid supplier, has refused long-range missiles to prevent escalating tensions with Russia.

Additionally, Zelensky met with Pope Francis to discuss the war’s humanitarian impact and the return of Ukrainian captives from Russia. He also held talks with French President Macron, refuting claims of discussing a ceasefire with Russia. As conflict continues, Zelensky seeks approval for long-range weapons to target military sites in Russia. The decision to withhold certain weaponry has sparked debate within Germany’s coalition government, highlighting the complexity and urgency of the situation in Ukraine.
