The latest report from the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine revealed a grim statistic: in September alone, 208 civilians lost their lives, and 1,220 were left injured. This marked the deadliest month of 2024, with a troubling increase in civilian casualties since July. Among the victims were nine children and a significant number of elderly individuals.
The use of missiles and aerial glide bombs, particularly targeting cities like Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, played a significant role in the high casualty count. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) near the frontlines also caused a substantial number of civilian casualties, with Kherson region experiencing attacks that the Russians cynically referred to as “human safaris.”
Most civilian casualties and damage to essential facilities occurred in territory controlled by Ukraine, with attacks on energy infrastructure further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. This report serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict’s devastating impact on innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
